What to see and do in Benasau

Benasau
Village
Benasau is a municipality in northern Alicante, in the comarca of the Condado de Cocentaina, which until the mid-19th century was called Benasau y Ares; it also comprises the village of Ares del Bosque, 1.5 kilometres away. Of Muslim origin, it was occupied around the mid-13th century by James I of Aragon; after the Morisco uprising of Al-Azraq and the subsequent expulsion of the Moriscos, it was left almost depopulated, with only 145 inhabitants in 1609. In the valley of the Frainos river it preserves the parish church of San Pedro, with its Communion chapel now dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and the Torre del Palacio de los Barones de Finestrat, Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection); nearby is the Font de l'Ullet. The festivities are held in honour of Saint Joachim from 16 August. It has 174 inhabitants (INE 2025).
