What to see and do in Torrevieja

Torrevieja
Village
Torrevieja, in Valencian Torrevella, is a coastal city in the Baix Segura comarca, in Alicante, situated beside the La Mata and Torrevieja lagoons, on the Mediterranean shore. With 98,533 inhabitants (INE 2025) it is the fifth-largest city in the Region of Valencia and one of the main tourist destinations of the Costa Blanca, famous for its salt flats. Its name comes from the two watchtowers that protected the coast during the Reconquista, Torrelamata and the old tower, next to the Cornuda cove; until 1802 the place had little more than that tower and a few saltworkers' houses, until in 1803 Charles IV moved the administration of the Salinas Reales here, salt pans predating the thirteenth century. It has 20 km of coastline, with beaches such as La Mata, Los Locos or El Acequión.

Nature
The parque natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja occupies part of the districts of Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura, Los Montesinos and Rojales, in the comarca of the Vega Baja del Segura. It is formed by two lagoons separated by an anticline called El Chaparral and joined to each other by a channel; in addition, they are artificially connected to the sea by two other channels known as the Acequiones, which forms a single salt-extraction unit. Together with the neighbouring parks of El Hondo and the Salinas de Santa Pola, it forms a wetland triangle that is decisive for the biological cycles of numerous species that use it during migration, nesting or wintering. It is also famous for the phenomenon of the pink lagoon, coloured by the action of micro-organisms.
Festivities of Torrevieja
Activity
Every 16 July Torrevieja pays tribute to the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of its sailors, with a musical wake-up call, a greasy pole over water and a land and sea procession of the image.
Sea salt of Torrevieja
Food and drink
The lagoons of Torrevieja and La Mata have produced sea salt by evaporation for centuries. The harvest is piled in white mountains beside the port and supplies both industry and kitchens, where it is used in salted preparations and brines.
