What to see and do in Benijófar

Benijófar
Village
Benijófar is one of the smallest municipalities in the comarca of El Baix Segura, in the south of Alicante, located on the right bank of the río Segura, within the Vega Baja. Its name comes from the Arabic Bani Ya'far, “sons of Ya'far”, and its origins go back to an Islamic alquería; as an independent entity it was born at the beginning of the 18th century under the Alfonsine privilege, which allowed a feudal nucleus to be formed with only fifteen residents, and in 1704 it obtained the barony of Benijófar. Its most emblematic monument is the waterwheel located on a bend of the Segura: the current iron structure dates from 1859 and replaced a 17th-century wheel made of Aleppo pine wood. The patron saint festivities, in honour of San Jaime from 25 July onwards, include comparsas of Moors and Christians.
