What to see and do in San Fulgencio

San Fulgencio
Village
San Fulgencio is a municipality in El Baix Segura, in the province of Alicante, 16 km south of Elche and 22 from Orihuela, the comarca's capital; despite its closeness to the sea, unlike its neighbours Elche and Guardamar del Segura, it has no coastline of its own. Founded in 1729 as one of the settlements Cardinal Belluga raised on drained marshland, alongside Dolores and San Felipe Neri, with a layout planned in advance and a name taken from the saint of Cartagena, it preserves an eighteenth-century parish church closely tied to that origin. Its climate, arid Mediterranean, is affected in autumn by cold-drop episodes that sometimes cause flooding, the last in September 2019. It has 9,769 inhabitants (2025).

Historical milestone
San Fulgencio was born in 1729 as one of the settlements that cardinal Belluga raised on the drained marshes, alongside Dolores and San Felipe Neri. Its name recalls the saint of Cartagena and its plan follows a prior design.
