What to see and do in Daya Vieja

Daya Vieja
Village
Daya Vieja is the smallest municipality in El Baix Segura, in Alicante, on the left bank of the río Segura. Together with Daya Nueva, it belonged to the district of Orihuela from the Reconquest until 1791, when both split off to form the municipality of Las Dayas; in 1871 Daya Vieja separated in turn. The earthquake of 1829 destroyed almost the entire town, rebuilt between 1855 and 1857, and in 2019 the flooding of the Segura left it once again waterlogged and isolated. Its economy is based on the irrigation of the acequia de Daya Vieja, with crops of artichoke, hemp, potato and maize. Its main religious reference is the parish of San Miguel Arcángel, next to the plaza del León, and it celebrates its festivities on 8 September in honour of the Virgen de Monserrate. It has 698 inhabitants.
