What to see and do in San Miguel de Salinas

San Miguel de Salinas
Village
San Miguel de Salinas, in southern Alicante province, is the highest village in the Vega Baja del Segura, whose municipal area descends through gullies, ravines and hills to El Llano, where the salt flats lie. It belonged to the municipal area of Orihuela until the nineteenth century and began to be settled around 1599; the hermitage built in 1600 was demolished in 1689, and the present church was completed in 1719, the year it separated as an independent parish. In 1813 its residents achieved the first separation from Orihuela. It preserves a quarter of troglodyte caves carved into the sandstone hillside of the town centre, which residents date to the mid-fifteenth century; its parish church, from the eighteenth century, was the only one in the area not to collapse during the great earthquake of 1829. It has 7,177 inhabitants.
Church of San Miguel Arcángel de San Miguel de Salinas
Monument
The 18th-century parish church of San Miguel de Salinas, the only one in the area that did not collapse during the great earthquake of 1829. On the same site there was previously a hermitage, built in 1600 and demolished in 1689; the current church was completed in 1719, and in 1723, at the request of the residents, the Chapter of the church of El Salvador in Orihuela separated it as an independent parish. After the 1829 earthquake, which left the village in ruins, its slow reconstruction was aided by the bishop of Orihuela, Félix Herrero Valverde.
Sierra Escalona
Nature
The Sierra Escalona is the extension, in the province of Alicante, of the Sierra de Carrascoy, which lies mostly in Murcia, and together with the Dehesa de Campoamor it forms a Special Protection Area (SPA) for birds shared between Orihuela, Pilar de la Horadada and San Miguel de Salinas, at the southern end of the province, with hiking trails and birdwatching routes. Running from east to west, with a maximum altitude of 345 metres at the Alcores peak, it has a rugged relief: the northern slopes are humid with dense vegetation, while the southern ones, much more arid, form what is known as the lunar landscape. The lowest stretches are occupied by citrus and stone-fruit orchards, and the range is crossed by the río Seco and río Nacimiento, which function as almost always dry ramblas (seasonal watercourses).
