What to see and do in Rojales

Rojales
Village
Rojales is a municipality in the province of Alicante, in the Vega Baja del Segura comarca, on the banks of that river, which crosses its traditional centre before flowing into the Mediterranean; from this relationship with water remains the ashlar bridge dating from the time of Charles III, from the eighteenth century, still in use. It has 17,451 inhabitants, most of them in Ciudad Quesada, and it is the municipality with the highest percentage of foreign population in the province, chiefly British and German. It owes much of its appeal to the Cuevas del Rodeo, a set of troglodyte dwellings carved into the rock, now restored as an artisan habitat. It also has several museums - an archaeological-palaeontological one, one of the Huerta and one of Holy Week - and hosts one of the longest-running lullaby and Christmas carol competitions in the country.
Cuevas del Rodeo
Nature
Las Cuevas del Rodeo are a group of cave dwellings dug into the hills that close off the town of Rojales to the south, in the comarca of El Baix Segura. Most of the caves and cave houses of Rojales were dug between the 18th and 19th centuries and the first decades of the 20th, in response to the land distribution of the Ancien Régime and the population growth linked to agricultural expansion. Since 1991, a rehabilitation plan driven by the town council and the Cultural Heritage Service turned the complex into an ecomuseum with fifteen craft workshop-caves and exhibition rooms, where courses, concerts, fairs and exhibitions devoted to the arts and craft trades are organized.
