What to see and do in Formentera del Segura

Formentera del Segura
Village
Formentera del Segura is one of the smallest municipalities in the Vega Baja del Segura, in the south of Alicante, with 4,868 inhabitants; it sits on the left bank of the río Segura, next to the hamlet of Los Palacios and 10 kilometres from Guardamar del Segura. Of Islamic origin, it was a lordship of Juan de Portugal and later of the marquises of Algorfa; it belonged to Orihuela until 1731, when it became independent by Alfonsine privilege, and until 1916 it was called simply Formentera. The earthquake of 1829 caused more than a hundred deaths and destroyed the town, which was rebuilt until the new church was completed in 1840. It preserves, in the sotos of the Segura, an 18th-century complex formed by the weir and the flour mill, shared with Benijófar, in operation until the 1960s and open to visitors today.
