Salt flats of Torrevieja and La Mata Nature · Torrevieja, El Baix Segura, Alicante The parque natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja occupies part of the districts of Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura, Los Montesinos and Rojales, in the comarca of the Vega Baja del Segura. It is formed by two lagoons separated by an anticline called El Chaparral and joined to each other by a channel; in addition, they are artificially connected to the sea by two other channels known as the Acequiones, which forms a single salt-extraction unit. Together with the neighbouring parks of El Hondo and the Salinas de Santa Pola, it forms a wetland triangle that is decisive for the biological cycles of numerous species that use it during migration, nesting or wintering. It is also famous for the phenomenon of the pink lagoon, coloured by the action of micro-organisms. Photo: Moisés Pastor (CC BY-SA 3.0 es) What to see and do in Torrevieja
