Jacarilla
Village
Jacarilla is one of the smallest municipalities in the Vega Baja del Segura comarca, in the province of Alicante, with 2,176 inhabitants, situated about one kilometre from the Segura river. Its municipal area, of 12.2 square kilometres, has remained united since 1572, when the entailed estate (mayorazgo) of Jacarilla was created, which belonged for centuries to the Togores family until the abolition of the seigneuries in 1811. After the mayorazgo was dissolved, its lands were divided among the children of José Joaquín Sandoval y Melgarejo; the eldest of them, Alfonso Sandoval Bassecourt, Baron of Petrés, was mayor of Alicante, a deputy and a senator, and founded the Caja Rural de Jacarilla in the village. The climate, dry Mediterranean, concentrates its rainfall in spring and autumn.
