What to see and do in Benejúzar

Benejúzar
Village
Benejúzar (in Valencian Benejússer) is a municipality in the Vega Baja del Segura, in southern Alicante, situated at the foot of the sierra that bears its name and crossed from west to east by the Segura river; it has 5,811 inhabitants. Its name, of Arabic origin (Beniyucef), already appears in the Book of Distribution of Orihuela after the Reconquista. The parish church, built in 1831 with two towers of unequal height, the clock tower and the bell tower, presides over the Plaza de España. On its territory stands the sanctuary of the Virgin of the Pilar, born as a hermitage built in barely a week in 1941 and raised to a sanctuary in 1980, and to the south lies the Sierra de Benejúzar, with its replanted Mediterranean woodland, its main natural area.

The parish that preceded it was founded in 1615, the year from which the town's oldest baptismal records are kept. From this church, located in the centre of the town, the pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the Virgen del Pilar sets out every year, almost two kilometres away.
