What to see and do in Algorfa

Algorfa
Village
Algorfa is a municipality in the Vega Baja del Segura comarca, in the province of Alicante, with 3,788 inhabitants, situated at the foot of the Escoteras area, beside the Segura river, on the way to Rojales and Guardamar. Its name comes from the Arabic al-gurfa, the attic or upper chamber. The place originated in the Algorfa estate, over which in 1790 King Charles IV granted the Marquises of Algorfa, Ignacio Pérez de Sarrió and Isabel Ruiz Dávalos, the privilege of jurisdiction over their tenants, thus forming the neighbourhood unit that gave rise to the municipality. The Algorfa hermitage, built in 1901 next to the manor house of the Marquises of Rojas with stone from the Escotera quarry, displays a neo-Gothic façade with a two-coloured rose window that became the centre of the village's life.
