What to see and do in Carranque

Carranque
Village
Carranque is a municipality in the comarca of La Sagra, in the province of Toledo, with 5,469 inhabitants (INE 2025), born from the union of two settlements, Carranque de Suso and Carranque de Yuso — a pre-Roman place name meaning 'place of stones' — and crossed by the Guadarrama river. After Alfonso VI's conquest in 1085, resettlement began in Carranque de Yuso and later moved to the higher area of Carranque de Suso; it belonged to the Orders of the Temple and of San Juan. Its most notable site is the Roman villa of Carranque, a late-Roman site with a 5th-century palace reused as a church in Visigothic times and one of the most remarkable sets of mosaics in Roman Hispania; it also preserves the hermitage of San Dimas and the church of Santa María Magdalena.
Roman Villa of Carranque
Nature
The Roman villa of Carranque, discovered in 1983 by a local resident during farm work beside the Guadarrama river, is one of the most notable mosaic complexes of Roman Hispania and may have been built by Maternus Cynegius, uncle of the emperor Theodosius, whose name appears on the mosaic of the main bedroom. It includes a late Roman site with a 5th-century Palatium, reused as a church in Visigothic times, as well as a paleo-Christian basilica and a nymphaeum. The palatial building, from around the year 400, was decorated with marble from Greece, Turkey, the Near East and Egypt and with glass-paste mosaics, comparable to those of the mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna. Excavations, begun in 1985, continue alongside the archaeological park, open to the public since 2003.
Church of Santa María Magdalena de Carranque
Monument
Parish church dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, patron saint of the town, whose feast day is celebrated on 22 July.
Hermitage of San Dimas
Monument
Hermitage in the municipal district of Carranque, one of the small devotional buildings preserved in the municipality.
The Guadarrama River as it flows through Carranque
Nature
The Guadarrama and its tributary streams cross the municipal district of Carranque, which lies at 665 metres above sea level, and form a riverside corridor of interest in the heart of La Sagra.
Carranque de Suso and Carranque de Yuso
Curiosity
The municipality grew out of two settlements, Carranque de Suso, the upper one, and Carranque de Yuso, the lower, which ended up merging for reasons of public health. The place name comes from the pre-Roman roots kar, stone, and anke, place of stones.
Living Nativity Scene of Carranque
Activity
