What to see and do in Ugena

Ugena
Village
Ugena is a municipality of La Sagra, in Toledo, with 5,988 inhabitants, whose place name, perhaps of Celtiberian origin, already appears at the Ugena gate of the old Mozarabic wall of Illescas. It was crown land until it was sold to the Count of la Roca in 1660, and in 1734 it passed to Francisco de Goyeneche, named Marquis of Ugena in 1735, whose family kept the lordship until 1780. Its main historic civil building is the palace of the Counts of Ugena, today the town hall, of which the original ground floor is preserved beneath a new upper storey. It also preserves the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Portería, from 1728, and the old abandoned Griñón aerodrome, and it celebrates its festivities in honour of St John the Baptist.
Palace of los Condes de Ugena
Monument
Palace of the Condes de Ugena, the main historic civil building in the town, which today houses the town hall. It was the counts' summer residence, and it is known that King Charles II used it as a resting palace on his journeys between Madrid and Toledo. It preserves the whole of the original ground floor, adapted and renovated, above which a newly built upper floor was raised; in the basement remains of a barrel vault, a capital and several wall springers are preserved, today visible behind protective display cases.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Portería
Monument
The Nuestra Señora de la Portería hermitage is a small rectangular building built in 1728 in Ugena (La Sagra, Toledo). It was originally a chapel that formed part of the palace complex of the Condes de Ugena; once the estate's walls and outbuildings had disappeared, the building was left as an independent structure within the town, and it is one of the devotional temples preserved in the municipality.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Ugena
Monument
Parish church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the town's patron saint.
The abandoned aerodrome of Griñón
Curiosity
In the municipal area of Ugena, the half-ruined installations of the old Griñón aerodrome are preserved, situated on the Torrejoncillo de los Higos airfield, a former depopulated settlement of the municipality now occupied by a housing development. It is a testament to the historic aviation of the area, listed in the local heritage as an abandoned feature.
Festivities of San Juan Bautista de Ugena
Activity
Ugena's patron saint fiestas in honour of San Juan Bautista, held on 24 June, the saint's day. They are preceded, on 15 May, by the feast of San Isidro, and the municipality's festive calendar is completed with the September fiestas.
