What to see and do in la Fatarella

La Fatarella
Village
La Fatarella is a wine-growing municipality in the Terra Alta, province of Tarragona, bordering the Ribera de Ebro, with relief ranging between 180 and 565 metres and a village at 486 metres of altitude. Its irregular streets preserve the perxes, stretches covered by stone arches joining houses, and many medieval façades show doorways with carved lintels. In the Middle Ages it was walled against bandits and wolves, until in the 17th century population growth forced expansion beyond the enclosure; before that there was a Muslim watchtower, where today stands the hermitage of the Mare de Déu de la Misericòrdia. It is remembered for the murder, in January 1937, of thirty-four peasants who resisted agrarian collectivization, and for its sausage, the llonganissa de la Fatarella.
La Fatarella Winter Main Festival
Activity
The Festes Majors d'Hivern de Sant Blai de la Fatarella are a traditional religious celebration of the village of la Fatarella, in the Terra Alta, in honour of Sant Blai, moved from 3 February to the first Saturday of the month to make it easier for the village's sons and daughters to attend. On Friday afternoon a cercavila with a music band announces the start of the festivities, and candles are blessed before Mass. The next day, at dawn, the Cant de l'Aurora goes through the streets, followed by the Rosari de l'Aurora; around midday the Majorals carry the tortades to the church of Sant Andreu to offer them to Sant Blai, and in the afternoon the three dansades of the jota de la Fatarella are danced in the Plaza Mayor. The festa dels Quintos and the festa de Santa Àgueda complete the programme.
Hermitage of la Fatarella
Monument
La Fatarella preserves several hermitages: that of Sant Francesc, with a pilgrimage of more than three hundred years' tradition on the first Saturday after Easter; that of Sant Bertomeu de les Camposines; and the chapel-viewpoint of the Mare de Déu de la Misericòrdia, built on the site believed to have held a Muslim watchtower — of which no trace remains — and from whose Arabic name the village's own place name may derive. From there, known as the viewpoint of the Terra Alta, a wide panorama can be seen over the territory that watchtower once controlled.
The events of la Fatarella
Historical milestone
The Fets de la Fatarella were a series of violent clashes that took place in late January 1937 in this village in the Terra Alta, a consequence of its inhabitants' resistance to attempts at forced collectivisation of their land by the Control Patrols led by the CNT-FAI. In la Fatarella the collective had been formed from the lands of the wealthiest landowners, without managing to bring in the rest of the peasantry. The incidents broke out on 24 January, when the farmers disarmed in the square two anarchist militiamen who were trying to force their way into the town hall; the resistance ended with the entry of armed columns into the village and the shooting of thirty-four residents. A monument erected in 2010 commemorates the victims.
