What to see and do in la Pobla de Massaluca

La Pobla de Massaluca
Village
La Pobla de Massaluca, in the Terra Alta comarca, north of Gandesa and on the border with Aragon, arose from the settlement charter that the Temple granted on 5 May 1294 to colonize the Devesa de Massaluca, lands of the castle of Miravet donated to the order in 1153; it preserves in its old quarter the late Gothic church of Sant Antoni, to which the January main festivities are dedicated. It has 344 inhabitants and has a railway station on the Barcelona-Zaragoza line. It lives mainly on the farming of olive, almond and vine; its oil has received important awards. In August it also holds festivities, and on the second weekend after Easter, a pilgrimage to the hermitage of Berrús.

Activity
La Pobla de Massaluca's Festa Major d'Hivern is held around 17 January, the feast of Sant Antoni Abat, the municipality's patron saint: four days of events starting on the Thursday with the lighting of the bonfire and closing on the Sunday, with the Cant de l'Aurora, sung rosaries, mass, coca and vi ranci competitions, and a ball de jota.

Monument
The hermitage of Berrús, linked to La Pobla de Massaluca in the comarca of the Terra Alta, is a rectangular-plan temple covered by a slab-roofed gable roof, supported by seven pointed diaphragm arches and topped by a slender bell-gable. Its history goes back to the 9th-10th centuries, when Berrús suffered a plague epidemic that decimated its population, and the survivors moved to the nearby villages. In the 20th century, when a reservoir was built, the company Enher dismantled the hermitage stone by stone and moved it to a higher spot to keep it from being submerged. Every year, on the second weekend after Easter, a well-attended pilgrimage arrives there, with residents from La Pobla de Massaluca, Ribarroja de Ebro, Fayón and Villalba de los Arcos.
