What to see and do in Vinebre

Vinebre
Village
Vinebre is a municipality in the comarca of the Ribera d'Ebre, in the province of Tarragona, near Ascó, with 427 inhabitants, which preserves its old termenat castle (a boundary castle) and several noble coats of arms scattered around the village. Among its heritage are the Iberian settlement of Sant Miquel, the hermitage of San Miguel and the Ca Don Joan house, from the 16th century, with the coat of arms of the Domènec family on its facade, as well as the old Teresian College, the work of Bernardí Martorell, a collaborator of Antoni Gaudí. Since 2017 the village has celebrated every year the Festa del Vimblanc, dedicated to local gastronomy and to the revival of the vimblanc, a fortified wine typical of the town. Among its distinguished residents are Enric d'Ossó, founder of the Teresian Sisters, and the architect Albert Viaplana.
Castle of Vinebre
Monument
Castell termenat that gives its name to the municipality of Vinebre.
Coat of Arms of the Ossó Donzell
Monument
1568 heraldic stone set into the door of the ancestral house of the Ossó family of Vinebre, placed there by Joan d'Ossó to record his status as a donzell (untitled nobleman); it combines the bear and pine tree of the family arms with the four bars of Catalonia.
Coat of Arms of Ca Don Joan
Monument
A stone coat of arms placed on the central axis of the façade of Ca Don Joan, a 16th-century Renaissance palace in Vinebre, also known as Ca Martí after the surname of its owners, the counts of la Torre, between the first-floor window and the attic window. The panel depicts a hand holding a bouquet, with plant ornamentation around the border and a knight's helmet as crest; it is a baroque work declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest, previously protected as a cultural asset of local interest since 1982.
Coat of Arms of Ca Martí
Monument
A coat of arms on a building of three bays and three storeys, on the corner of carrer Major and carrer del Forn in Vinebre, known as Ca Martí -today casa Poquet- and considered one of the manor houses of the village; it is the second coat of arms of the Martí family, counts of la Torre, linked to the renovation the building, also called Ca Don Joan, underwent in the early 18th century. Between the building's two doorways, beneath the base of the balcony, the quartered shield shows a tree and a set square with a nail in the upper quarters, and the monograms of Jesus and Mary in the lower ones; below is the inscription “FRA NRE / BOLLAR / AÑO 1706”. The family records of the Domènech and Martí families are kept in the Arxiu Comarcal (district archive) of the Ribera d'Ebre.
Vinebre Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Vinebre, in honor of Sant Miquel, is celebrated around 25 August (25/08/2026 according to recent scheduling) with processions of giants and bigheads (gegants i capgrossos), correfocs and nighttime dances by the Ebro, as well as a food fair with local products and wines.
Birth of Enric d'Ossó
Historical milestone
Enric d'Ossó i Cervelló was born in Vinebre on 16 October 1840, the son of well-off farmers, and died in Gilet (Camp de Morvedre) in 1896. After his mother's death in 1854 he decided to pursue an ecclesiastical career: he entered the seminary of Tortosa and was ordained a priest in 1867, later working as a teacher at the same seminary. In 1873 he founded the Association of Daughters of Mary Immaculate and Saint Teresa of Jesus, and on 23 June 1876 he founded in Tarragona the Company of Saint Teresa of Jesus —the Teresians—, a congregation devoted to the education of girls, approved by the Holy See in 1888; that same year he commissioned Antoni Gaudí to build the Teresianas College in Barcelona as the mother house of the order. He was canonised in 1993 and his birth house is preserved as a place to visit in the old quarter of Vinebre.
