What to see and do in la Vilella Baixa

La Vilella Baixa
Village
La Vilella Baixa is a municipality in Priorat, in the province of Tarragona, situated at 218 metres above sea level beside the Montsant river, with 201 inhabitants. It belonged to the barony of Cabacés; in 1848 it was occupied by Carlist troops, who eventually surrendered and joined the Isabelline ranks. Its church, dedicated to Sant Joan Baptista, is an 18th-century building in neoclassical style with three naves, with the bell tower attached; in the area of Mas Roger, 10th-century documents have been found that refer to the settlement by the Arabic name of Vahala. It preserves the street that does not go through, from the old medieval settlement, and a Romanesque bridge over the Montsant to which a third arch was added in 1886. The main festival is celebrated on the second Easter.
