What to see and do in la Figuera

La Figuera
Village
La Figuera is a small municipality in the comarca of the Priorat, devoted mainly to growing vines and olives, situated at 575 m of altitude, from where the comarca is overlooked from what is known as the Balcony of the Priorat. It was already inhabited in prehistoric times, and during the Saracen occupation it belonged to the Taifa of Tortosa. The bishop of Tortosa granted a charter of settlement in 1182 under the name Gibaldaber. The village was walled and fortified; today some remains of the wall can still be made out, and popular memory preserves the location of its old gateways, also recalled in street names such as Portalet or Muralla i Castell.
Wall of la Figuera
Monument
Remains of the medieval wall that surrounded the settlement of la Figuera, in Priorat (Tarragona). According to oral tradition, the village was walled and fortified, and in the 18th century the parish church of Sant Martí was built on top of an old defensive structure that formed part of that enclosure. Today only scattered fragments of the original layout remain, whose memory is kept in the street names: Carrer del Portalet, Carrer de la Muralla, and the area known as El Castell, which mark the location of the old entrance gates to the walled town. The wall has been declared an Asset of National Cultural Interest since 8 November 1988.
La Figuera Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major de la Figuera is held for Sant Pau on 15 January, in a village that received a settlement charter from the bishop of Tortosa in 1182 after the 12th-century Christian conquest. Its traditional dance is the jota, in its own version known as the jota de la Figuera.
