What to see and do in Cabacés

Cabacés
Village
Cabacés is a municipality in the comarca of the Priorat, in the province of Tarragona, situated on the boundary with the Ribera d'Ebre, with 296 inhabitants. It is one of the few Catalan municipalities that officially keeps its place name in Spanish. After the Reconquest it was made part of the territory of Ciurana, and in 1149 Ramon Berenguer IV gave its lands to a Flemish monastery for resettlement; it obtained a charter of settlement in 1185, establishing the barony of Cabacés, whose title belonged to the Church until 1991. Its economy has been based on dry farming, with vines, olives, almonds and hazelnuts. The parish church, from the 17th century, preserves an altarpiece attributed to Lluís Borrassà, from 1400. The municipality preserves the castle and the old monastery of Santa Maria de Vallclara.

Monument
Despite its popular name, the complex known until the 20th century as the castell de Cabacés was originally a monastery: in 1149 the count-king Ramon Berenguer IV granted the place to Abbot Esteve, of the Premonstratensian order, to build a monastery and oratory there. The attempt failed, and in 1158 the priory passed to the cathedral of Tortosa and to Bishop Gaufred; in 1266 an agreement between the bishop and the chapter granted the castle to the prior and the chapter, although the bishops retained the lordship of the barony until the 19th century. The old chapel, which had served as the parish church, was torn down in 1870, and in 1933 public schools were built on the site; in Romanesque style, only the west wall survives, with two rows of arrow slits.

Activity
The Festa Major de Cabacés is held in a municipality whose official name, Cabacés, has for decades differed from the standard Catalan form, Cabassers, a dispute the town council keeps open in signs and documents.

Historical milestone
The official name of the municipality was fixed with the spelling Cabacés, while the normative form in Catalan is Cabassers. The town council has been claiming the change for decades and the discrepancy persists on signs and official documents.
