What to see and do in Gratallops

Gratallops
Village
Gratallops is a town in the Priorat, in the province of Tarragona, with 226 inhabitants (INE 2025), considered the heart of the DOQ Priorat and home to some of its most prestigious wineries. Its original name was Vilanova del Pi, changed owing to the abundance of wolves (llops); mentioned in 1258, when it received its charter of settlement, it belonged to the county of Prades. Dry farming, mainly of vines and olives, has been its economic base, and since 1917 it has had a cooperative producing designation-of-origin wines. It preserves the church of Sant Llorenç, 18th-century neoclassical, and the Casa dels Frares, a former residence of the monks of Escaladei; on the outskirts, the Romanesque hermitage of the Virgin of Consolació, burned down in 1936. The main festival is on 10 August.
Llicorella
Nature
Llicorella is the characteristic slate soil of Priorat, the basis of the distinctiveness of its wines. It is a metamorphic rock of sedimentary origin, with a fine, homogeneous granular texture, formed by the compaction of clays, which may contain quartz, mica, clay minerals and feldspars. It generally appears in a dark bluish or opaque greyish colour, although reddish, greenish and other-toned varieties also exist.
DOQ Priorat
Curiosity
The Priorat is the only Qualified Designation of Origin in Catalonia, a distinction obtained in 2000 after having been recognized as a protected wine-growing zone since 1932 and holding a Designation of Origin since 1954. Vine cultivation was introduced in the comarca in the 12th century, when the Carthusian monks of Scala Dei arrived from Provence, so it adds up to almost a thousand years of winemaking tradition. Its soils, known as llicorella, are shallow lithosols over compact carboniferous slate, with abundant stones that curb erosion and allow cultivation on steep slopes. The designation covers eleven municipalities, among them Gratallops, Porrera, Torroja del Priorat, Poboleda and Falset.
Gratallops Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major de Gratallops is held in the town considered the heart of the DOQ Priorat, where from 1979 a small group of winegrowers revived old garnacha and cariñena vines on slate soils that changed the region's reputation.
Terraced hillside vineyards of the Priorat
Nature
The costers, terraced slopes of llicorella (slate soil), are the characteristic landscape of the Priorat in municipalities such as Gratallops, in the historic heart of the comarca. The municipality, with a relief of ravines and ridges delimiting small valleys, ranges from the 337 metres of the town centre to the 424 metres of the highest areas. The cultivation of the vine, together with olive and almond trees, has been the main economic activity since the 18th century; since 1917 there has been an agricultural cooperative that produces wines with the Priorat designation of origin. Since the late 1980s, the wines from these terraced slopes have gained international prestige, with a significant share destined for export; the municipality has around twenty-two wineries, including those of Álvaro Palacios and Clos Mogador.
Gratallops Winter Main Festival
Activity
Gratallops's Festa Major d'Hivern is held in the town at the heart of the DOQ Priorat, with more than a thousand years of vine cultivation on llicorella soils.
Wine renaissance of the Priorat
Historical milestone
From 1979 onwards a small group of winegrowers settled in the district and recovered old garnacha and cariñena vines on slate. The wines they presented at the end of the eighties changed the reputation of the comarca and its prices.
