What to see and do in Torroja del Priorat

Torroja del Priorat
Village
Torroja del Priorat is a municipality in the comarca of Priorat, in the province of Tarragona, situated on the banks of the Siurana river and covered by the DOQ Priorat designation. Its name comes from the Torre Roja, a 10th-century Arab watchtower, of which barely any remains survive, apart from the door and the grille of a former prison. The village was fortified during the First Carlist War, and in the second it was the church that was fortified, though it ended up burned down after being occupied by Carlist troops. It has 129 inhabitants, who live from the vine, almond, hazel and olive trees, with an agricultural cooperative since 1934. The parish church of San Miguel, from the 18th century, preserves an organ from 1800. The main festival is celebrated on 29 September.

White wines of white Grenache and Pedro Ximénez
Food and drink
Alongside the reds, the comarca preserves white vines of garnacha blanca, macabeo and pedro ximénez planted at the higher levels. They give wines of body and low acidity, often aged in wood, which have been recovered in recent years.
