DOQ Priorat Curiosity · Gratallops, Priorat, Tarragona The Priorat is the only Qualified Designation of Origin in Catalonia, a distinction obtained in 2000 after having been recognized as a protected wine-growing zone since 1932 and holding a Designation of Origin since 1954. Vine cultivation was introduced in the comarca in the 12th century, when the Carthusian monks of Scala Dei arrived from Provence, so it adds up to almost a thousand years of winemaking tradition. Its soils, known as llicorella, are shallow lithosols over compact carboniferous slate, with abundant stones that curb erosion and allow cultivation on steep slopes. The designation covers eleven municipalities, among them Gratallops, Porrera, Torroja del Priorat, Poboleda and Falset. Photo: Lohen11- Josep Renalias (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Gratallops
