Llicorella is the characteristic slate soil of Priorat, the basis of the distinctiveness of its wines. It is a metamorphic rock of sedimentary origin, with a fine, homogeneous granular texture, formed by the compaction of clays, which may contain quartz, mica, clay minerals and feldspars. It generally appears in a dark bluish or opaque greyish colour, although reddish, greenish and other-toned varieties also exist.
