What to see and do in Porrera

Porrera
Village
Porrera is a town in the Priorat, in Tarragona, known for the high quality of its red wines, with 405 inhabitants. First mentioned in 1157 as Valporriera, it belonged to the monastery of Sant Vicenç de Pedrabona, which in 1263 ceded its lands to the charterhouse of Escaladei. The town, then walled, was occupied by French troops in 1650 and sided with Archduke Charles in the War of the Spanish Succession; at the end of the conflict, its walls and the termened castle of Porrera were ordered destroyed, of which no trace survives today. It was again occupied by French troops until their defeat in 1811. Its economy rests on the cultivation of vines, almonds and hazelnuts, and it preserves the parish church of Sant Joan Baptista, from 1771.
Castle of Porrera
Monument
Of the castle of Porrera, of medieval origin, no archaeological remains survive today, although the land it occupied retains the name «era del castell» and a neighbourhood and a street in the upper part of the village are called «del Castell». It probably fell out of use around 1718: after Porrera's support for the Austracist side during the War of the Spanish Succession, the Audiencia decreed the demolition of the town's walls, at which point the castle also seems to have disappeared. It has been declared an Asset of National Cultural Interest by decree of 22 April 1949.
Porrera Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major de Porrera is held in a town known for its red wines, made from old garnacha and cariñena vines planted on steep costers that give minimal yields and highly concentrated grapes.
Porrera Winter Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major d'Hivern (Winter Patron Saint Festival) of Porrera is celebrated on the second Sunday of November in honour of Sant Francesc d'Assís; it was moved to this date to better coincide with the grape harvest. During the festival typical patron-saint-festival acts take place, such as the trencada d'olla (pot-breaking) and the distribution of coques (flatbreads), in a town known for its red wines, next to the termened castle of Porrera.
Old-vine Grenache and Carignan
Food and drink
The old vines planted on steeply sloping costers give minimal yields and very concentrated grapes. From them come the dense, mineral reds that have made the comarca known, often vinified by separate plots.
