Els Muntells
Curiosity
Els Muntells is a population centre located in the southern sector of the Ebro delta, between the Tancada lagoon and the Platjola pool, near the strip of land called el Trabucador. It was formed from 1860 onward, when the Dreta de l'Ebre canal made it possible to introduce rice growing through a complex irrigation network and the draining of the delta lands; it began as a cluster of huts made of reeds, cane and mud that gradually lined up along what is today calle Major. It is a minor local entity belonging to the municipality of Sant Jaume d'Enveja, which split from Tortosa in 1978 and moved from the Baix Ebre county to the Montsià county in 1990. Its residents live mainly from agriculture, growing rice in summer and citrus fruit and greenhouse crops in winter.
Sant Jaume d'Enveja
Village
Sant Jaume d'Enveja is a municipality in the Montsià county, in the province of Tarragona, situated right in the centre of the Ebro Delta natural park, in the right half-delta, among rice fields and canals. Its municipal area, created in 1978 by splitting off from Tortosa, brings together the settlements of San Jaime de Enveija, Balada and els Muntells, and touches the sea along a long sandy coast of lagoons and wetlands. The place name comes from the Arabic Ibn Baja. Intensive agriculture, especially rice growing, sustains the municipality's economy, complemented by growing tourism linked to the natural park's biodiversity and by hospitality; in the past, the origin of the settlement was linked to the exploitation of the area's saltworks, active until the mid-19th century.

The rice fields, which cover about 21,000 hectares of the delta, shape the life cycle of much of this wildlife. The area has been a Ramsar wetland since 1993 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2013.
