What to see and do in Camarles

Camarles
Village
Camarles is a municipality in the Ebro Delta, in the comarca of Baix Ebre, province of Tarragona, with two medieval watchtowers: that of Camarles, circular and made of stone, built on an old Islamic farmstead, and that of La Granadella, square, both granted in 1150 by Ramon Berenguer IV. It was separated from Tortosa in 1978, and Iberian archaeological remains have been found in the municipality, including a settlement with more than fifty fired-clay lamps dedicated to the goddess Tanit. Its economy is based on irrigated farming, especially rice, with a rice cooperative active since 1956, in addition to carob, olive and almond trees. It has 3,465 inhabitants.
Tower of la Granadella
Monument
The only surviving part of the Granadella castle, in Camarles, next to the 19th-century Jordà family house and a church from the 19th-20th centuries. It has a square plan, about sixteen metres high on the ground floor plus three storeys, built during the 13th century, and finishes in a terrace; medieval documentation refers indiscriminately to the castle and the tower, which creates confusion as to which was the original building. The original access was through a voussoired doorway on the first floor, and another was later opened on the ground floor, with ashlar blocks only roughly dressed except at the corners. The area is documented from January 1153, and a year later Count Ramon Berenguer IV donated it to the bishop of Tortosa; in the 14th century it remained linked to the Jordà house of Tortosa, and in the 19th century it passed to the Marquis of la Roca.
Camarles Main Festival
Activity
Camarles, alongside the Torre de la Granadella ceded to the bishop of Tortosa in 1154, celebrates its Festa Major like the rest of the municipalities split off from Tortosa in the Baix Ebre.
Camarles Winter Main Festival
Activity
Camarles's Festa Major d'Hivern is held in a municipality that separated from Tortosa in 1981 and where the Torre de la Granadella, with its church, was ceded by count Ramon Berenguer IV to bishop Gaufret of Avignon on 22 January 1154.
Delta rice fields in Camarles
Nature
The rice fields of the Ebro delta occupy a good part of the municipal territory of Camarles, in the area of contact with the deltaic platform. Every year more than 45 million kilos of rice are grown and harvested in this area, irrigated by the left canal of the Ebro. Alongside rice, Camarles's economy also relies on the cultivation of vegetables and fruit trees, especially citrus, which complete an agricultural landscape characteristic of the delta.
Hermitage of Camarles
Monument
Hermitage in the municipal district of Camarles, a village where the Torre de la Granadella, with its church, was ceded by count Ramon Berenguer IV to bishop Gaufret of Avignon on 22 January 1154.
