What to see and do in Freginals

Freginals
Village
Freginals is a municipality in the Montsià county, in the province of Tarragona, with 443 inhabitants, within whose territory prehistoric rock-art shelters are found. It first appears documented in 1222, although only as a place name; the charter of settlement of Ulldecona mentions the coll de Freginals, where the Hospitallers settled. After the Battle of Almansa the Bourbon troops burned the settlement, which was loyal to Archduke Charles, and it was not constituted as an independent municipality until 1843. It lives from agriculture, with the olive as its main crop. The parish church of San Bartolomé, with a Baroque facade and Gothic interior, was built in the 18th century; in the centre of the village stands the old Miralles family house, rebuilt in 1728.

Nature
The Abric de les Llibreres, in the municipality of Freginals (Montsià), preserves prehistoric cave-painting representations protected as a World Heritage Site within the Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula. It is located near the Pietat cliff, in the Godall mountains, and was discovered in April 1983 by the Centre Excursionista of Ulldecona. It measures 5.5 by 2.4 metres, with a difficult access facing east. Less than a metre from the present ground level a scene is preserved with seven quadruped figures — deer and goats, identifiable by their neck, head and horns — painted using the flat-colour technique in dark red tones, all of them facing left except one.
