What to see and do in l'Aldea

L'Aldea
Village
L'Aldea is a municipality in the comarca of Baix Ebre, in the province of Tarragona, located on the left bank of the Ebro River, before its delta, in an area of irrigation canals and channels. It originated in an old Saracen almunia; it was ceded in 1148 for resettlement and later passed to the Templars and, later still, to the Hospitallers of Amposta. It was separated from Tortosa in 1983 and today has 4,657 inhabitants; its economy is based on growing cereals, olives, carob trees and rice. In 1957 Neolithic burials were found in the area of La Palma. The municipality retains four medieval towers: Burjassénia, documented in 1188; Vinaixarop, from the 13th century; the Torre de la Candela, from the 16th century, and the hermitage tower.
Firework Workshops of the Terres de l'Ebre
Monument
The coeteres are a group of vernacular buildings built between 1950 and 1973 in the Ebro Delta to store and fire the anti-hail rockets that protected the rice fields from hailstorms. In the municipality of l'Aldea stands the one known as Ravanals, one of twelve coeteres declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), in the category of area of ethnological interest, by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2017. These structures had to provide dry conditions for storing the rockets and their launchers, as well as sufficient safety for the work of the coeteros who fired them. Thirty-eight were built between 1950 and 1973, of which 26 survive, funded by the Mutualidad Arrocera de Seguros following the heavy hail losses of the 1940s.
Tower of l'Aldea
Monument
This is the hermitage tower, regarded as the symbol of the municipality. It has been dated to the 12th century and was rebuilt in the 18th; it forms part of the line of towers that marked the final stretch of the Ebro, together with those of la Candela, Burjassènia and Vinaixarop.
Tower of la Candela
Monument
The Torre de la Candela is a watchtower on the left bank of the Ebro, in the municipality of l'Aldea, halfway between the castle of Amposta and the tower of Burjassènia, with which it watched over the final stretch of the river. It stands between 12 and 14 metres high, with a diameter of about 4 metres at the base and 3 at the top; the reinforced base has no openings except for two water cisterns, and the cylindrical body retains a deteriorated window and what was once the door, with a monolithic lintel, facing west and 3.8 metres above the ground. It is dated to around the 13th century, without ruling out an earlier origin in the 12th century, as the documentation suggests: it appears mentioned at the end of 1153, when the Templars gave up their share of the castle of Amposta and of this tower in favour of the Hospital. It is Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
L'Aldea Winter Main Festival
Activity
L'Aldea's Festa Major d'Hivern is held beside the Torre de la Candela, documented since 1153 when it passed from the Temple to the Hospital, and the Torre de l'Aldea, from the 12th century and rebuilt in the 18th, both part of the line of towers that watched over the final stretch of the Ebro.
Hermitage of l'Aldea
Monument
The hermitage stands next to the tower of l'Aldea, from the 12th century and rebuilt in the 18th, one of the four old towers preserved in the municipality that served to defend the mouth of the Ebro. The other three are that of Burjassènia, already documented in 1188 and with a circular base 14 metres high, that of Vinaixarop, mentioned in documents from 1288, also with a circular base, and that of la Candela, from the 16th century.
