What to see and do in Santa Bàrbara

Santa Bàrbara
Village
Santa Bàrbara lies on flat ground along the right bank of the Ebro, in the Montsià county. It was founded in the mid-18th century as an agricultural colonisation by families who came from Tortosa to farm land that had until then been barren; in 1762 it already had 39 families, gained the status of municipality in 1817 and achieved full autonomy on 9 May 1828 by royal privilege of Ferdinand VII. It lives from the olive and citrus fruit, with two cooperatives that produce its oil, and from furniture making. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Barbara, was built between 1890 and 1913, a period to which the market and the town hall also belong. In November it holds a fair devoted to oil that has brought together producers from the county since 1997. It has 3,871 inhabitants.
Church of Santa Bàrbara
Monument
The church of Santa Bàrbara stands in a municipality settled after the War of the Spanish Succession of 1714, whose municipal independence was sanctioned by Ferdinand VII on 9 May 1828. The first settlement of the plains, around 1745, was made up of people from Tortosa, who in 1758 built a chapel dedicated to the saint, the seed of today's town centre; the first parish church was built in 1808, and the current one, built with the help of the whole town from 1894, suffered a partial collapse that delayed the work until its inauguration in 1903; the bell tower and rose window were finished in 1911, and the vault in 1912. Rectangular in plan with a 35-metre tower, it shows neo-Gothic elements of eclecticism and was extended to occupy the whole block between 1949 and 1953.
