Tower of la Candela Monument · l'Aldea, Baix Ebre, Tarragona The Torre de la Candela is a watchtower on the left bank of the Ebro, in the municipality of l'Aldea, halfway between the castle of Amposta and the tower of Burjassènia, with which it watched over the final stretch of the river. It stands between 12 and 14 metres high, with a diameter of about 4 metres at the base and 3 at the top; the reinforced base has no openings except for two water cisterns, and the cylindrical body retains a deteriorated window and what was once the door, with a monolithic lintel, facing west and 3.8 metres above the ground. It is dated to around the 13th century, without ruling out an earlier origin in the 12th century, as the documentation suggests: it appears mentioned at the end of 1153, when the Templars gave up their share of the castle of Amposta and of this tower in favour of the Hospital. It is Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Photo: Deosringas (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in l'Aldea
