What to see and do in Riudoms

Riudoms
Village
Riudoms is a town in the comarca of Baix Camp, in Tarragona, about five kilometres from Reus, with the church of Sant Jaume, known for its hazelnuts. Situated next to the Riudoms stream, which has occasionally flooded its streets, it was resettled in 1151 under a commission given to Arnau de Palomar, who also received the mandate to build a castle. In 1319 it was the setting for a singular episode: summoned to persuade Infante James, heir of James II of Aragon, not to renounce his marriage to Eleanor of Castile, he ended up renouncing his rights and becoming a priest. The parish church of Sant Jaume, begun in 1599, preserves the remains of the Blessed Bonaventura Gran, born in the town, and its square preserves 16th-century arcades. It has 6,891 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Church of Sant Jaume de Riudoms
Monument
Sant Jaume de Riudoms is the parish church of this town in the Baix Camp, dedicated to Saint James the Great and protected as a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's designation for cultural heritage of national interest) since 2019. Its design, wrongly attributed for years to Pere Blai, was actually the work of the builders of the church of Ulldemolins, led by master builder Joan Sans together with Jaume Amigó; the works, begun in late 1593 under the Occitan master builder Joan Mas, were completed in 1617. It has a very wide central nave with six side chapels on each side and a polygonal apse, and a distinctive facade with classical columns and a large rose window depicting Saint James's intervention in the legendary Battle of Clavijo. The bell tower, at the foot of the church, remained unfinished until 1877.
Fair of l'Avellana de Riudoms
Activity
The Fira de l'Avellana de Riudoms, held on the second weekend of August, has its origin in the former Fira de Sant Llorenç, an agricultural and livestock fair documented since 1599 that was held every 10 August. Since 1981 it has also been devoted to the hazelnut, one of the municipality's main agricultural products, with the aim of showcasing its uses in cooking, pastry-making and drinks; it brings together producers, cooperatives and agricultural machinery, and includes tastings and the direct sale of the nut freshly gathered from the harvest. On Sunday afternoon the traditional race of hazelnut sack carriers is held, and the fair also offers attractions for all ages.
