What to see and do in Botarell

Botarell
Village
Botarell is a municipality in the Baix Camp, in Tarragona, situated at the foot of the Prades mountains, between the Les Voltes and Riudecols streams; the village stands at 196 metres altitude. Its old town developed between the lower part of the castle and a very old drinking-water spring, with the parallel streets of Amunt and Avall, and is made up of terraced houses with double-pitched roofs. The origin of its name is debated: popular tradition links it to the cooper's trade, from which would come the wineskin on its coat of arms, but toponymic studies point to an Arabic or Mozarabic origin, documented around 1153-1173. It preserves the church of Sant Llorenç, Renaissance in style and predating 1573, whose original altarpieces were destroyed in 1936. It has 1,161 inhabitants (2025).
