What to see and do in Riudecols

Riudecols
Village
Riudecols is a municipality in the comarca of Baix Camp, in the province of Tarragona, with 1,264 inhabitants, situated at 299 metres of altitude at the foot of Puig Cerver, in the upper valleys of the Voltes and Irles streams; its name probably comes from Riu-de-còdols, “river of pebbles.” Middle Palaeolithic sites have been found, although the present-day population centres were not formed until after the Christian reconquest, in the 12th century, when the place received a subfief in 1182. In 1837 it was the scene of a battle of the First Carlist War, in which about 250 Carlist soldiers died surrounded by liberal troops. At its southern end the ruins of the Torre dels Moros are preserved, together with the remains of a Roman villa and late Roman burials.
Tower of els Moros de Riudecols
Monument
Medieval watch and defence tower located on the Camí de les Roques, between the Puig de Vilavella and the railway line, about three kilometres southeast of Riudecols, in the Baix Camp, declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's designation for cultural heritage of national interest). The tower, now in ruins, is trapezoidal in plan, with a base of eight by five metres and a current height of about five metres, with reinforcements at the corners; it retains remains of arrow slits and battlements, some with reused Roman roof tiles as material. It is thought to date from the 16th century or earlier, and to have served to watch the coast and the roads in the time of the Berber pirates, from whom its name derives; at its foot remains of a Roman villa and a small late-Roman necropolis have been found.
