What to see and do in les Borges del Camp

Les Borges del Camp
Village
Les Borges del Camp is a municipality in the Tarragona Baix Camp, at the foot of the Serra de la Mussara, with about 2,300 inhabitants. Already mentioned in 1154 in a bull of Anastasius IV, it was part of the Alforja valley until Peter III ordered it to be walled —the walls were still standing in 1774— and it did not achieve administrative independence until 1835. It suffered economic crises from the 16th century onward, worsened by the Reapers' War and a plague in 1650, and was occupied by French and Carlist troops, and in the Civil War was bombed by German aviation. Its church, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, was begun in 1773; it has a neoclassical façade, three naves, a baroque choir and a 27-metre bell tower. Nearby, the Mare de Déu de la Riera hermitage holds a 13th-century carving, in a building from 1954.
