What to see and do in Vinyols i els Arcs

Vinyols i els Arcs
Village
Vinyols i els Arcs is a municipality of Tarragona, in Baix Camp, formed by the union of two old settlements, Vinyols and els Arcs, which came to be separated by 6.5 kilometres. The name Vinyols comes from the Latin vineola or the Catalan vinya (“vineyard”), while that of Arcs has been linked to the Arabic àrakhs (“oxen”) or to an old enclosed spring beside the Via Augusta, near Cambrils. In its territory remains of the Lower Palaeolithic have been found, along with a Neolithic settlement and a Roman villa, although the present-day settlements arose in the 12th century, during the resettlement of Catalunya Nova. Its parish church, dedicated to Saint Catherine, is baroque in style, built between 1770 and 1778, with a Greek-cross plan and a 36-metre bell tower. It has 2,450 inhabitants.
