What to see and do in Mont-roig del Camp

Mont-roig del Camp
Village
Mont-roig del Camp is a town in the comarca of Baix Camp, in the province of Tarragona, situated between the Sierra de Colldejou and the Mediterranean, with a population of 14,615 inhabitants. Its coastline stretches from the Riudecanyes stream to Miami Platja. The place is first recorded in 1118, in a deed of donation by Ramon Berenguer III, and by 1158 it is already mentioned as a town with a castle; it received its charter of settlement in 1180. The town rose up in 1808 forming a somatén (an armed civil militia) and in 1811 suffered a twelve-hour siege by the troops of General Suchet. Mont-roig del Camp is linked to the painter Joan Miró, who lived and painted there at the Mas Miró.
Fortress and Wheat Store of Barcelona
Monument
Remains of an abandoned settlement located between the points of Penyals and Porquerola, in the municipality of Mont-roig del Camp (Baix Camp, Tarragona), next to l'Hospitalet de l'Infant. In the early 15th century the municipality of Barcelona acquired the site to secure the transport of wheat coming down the Ebro to the city, and built a fortified warehouse with granaries, a defence tower and a small settlement; the grain arrived by cart from Tívissa to await shipment. In 1408 corsairs destroyed the installation and captured its inhabitants, who were rescued by the Comuna del Camp. The settlement was abandoned in the late 15th century and the tower was blown up by the British in 1813; today only stone walls with ashlar reinforcements remain.
Mas Miró
Monument
Mas Miró is an estate located on the outskirts, to the southeast, of Mont-roig del Camp (Baix Camp), made up of a series of buildings from various periods ranging from the 18th to the 20th century, and it is listed as a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's designation for cultural heritage of national interest). Beyond its historical, architectural and landscape value, the mas has an added value: here much of the work and pictorial universe of Joan Miró took shape, as he decided in this place to devote himself exclusively to painting. From these lands and this physical space came the first works that launched him internationally, making him one of the most important painters of the 20th century.
