What to see and do in Colldejou

Colldejou
Village
Colldejou is a small mountain municipality in the comarca of Baix Camp, on the border with Priorat, at the foot of the Serra de Llaberia and the Mola de Colldejou (914 m), with 155 inhabitants. Its origin is unclear: some sources place it as a Saracen farmstead, while historian Eduard Toda attributes it a Roman origin; it appears documented from 1154. In 1197 it passed into the hands of the monastery of Sant Miquel d'Escornalbou, becoming part of its barony. It preserves remains of the wall that surrounded the village and of a fort next to the Mola, both from the Carlist Wars. It lives on dry-farming agriculture —hazelnut, vine and almond trees— and celebrates its main festival in August, for Saint Lawrence, with excursions to the top of the Mola, from where the Ebro river can be seen on clear days.
Castle of la Mola
Monument
A tower located in the municipal area of Colldejou, in Baix Camp, protected as bien cultural de interés nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It is a circular, single-storey structure, built of dry stone and possibly covered with a false dome; the literature places it around the mid-19th century, although its construction, a type of vernacular work very common in the area, makes precise dating difficult. It was built during the Third Carlist War for optical telegraphy, similarly to the Torre de l'Esquirol in Cambrils, using boards visible for kilometres. It is believed that an Iberian settlement once stood on the summit and that the site was used by Romans and Saracens, and tradition places here the refuge of the legendary Carrasclet, in the 18th century, fleeing Bourbon troops.
