What to see and do in l'Argentera

L'Argentera
Village
L'Argentera is a small rural municipality in the Baix Camp, in Tarragona, in the Serra de Llaberia. Its territory, only 9.83 km², occupies the eastern slope of the Serra de l'Argentera, beneath Puig d'Escornalbou, where the castle of the same name stands, and it has been a summer retreat for people from Reus. It is believed to have been founded by the Romans, who mined galena here, and it remained abandoned until, around 1162, its lands were enfeoffed to the monastery of Sant Vicenç de Pedrabona; the village already existed in 1178, when its Romanesque church was built, rediscovered in 1918 by Eduard Toda i Güell, who bought its materials to restore Escornalbou castle. The land is mostly scrubland (garriga), with hazelnut, olive and vine.
Mountain range of Llaberia
Nature
The Serra de Llaberia forms part of the Catalan Serralada Prelitoral, between the Muntanyes de Prades and those of Tivissa-Vandellòs, on the boundary between Baix Camp and Ribera d'Ebre, with a maximum elevation of 918 metres. It is characterised by its limestone cliffs, very regular and pale in tone, which surround the two great massifs of Llaberia and Colldejou, both above 900 metres. A large part of its area is protected by the PEIN (Plan of Areas of Natural Interest). Its vegetation combines Mediterranean holm-oak woods and scrubland with some Eurosiberian and high-mountain communities, and it is home to typically Mediterranean fauna linked to woodland and rocky habitats, with abundant birds of prey and endemic invertebrates, the latter threatened by uncontrolled collecting.
