Church of la Puríssima Sang Monument · Alcover, Alt Camp, Tarragona The church of la Puríssima Sang, in the centre of Alcover (Alt Camp, Tarragona), is a Romanesque temple from the late 12th century built in red ashlar stone. It has a single nave of ten by thirteen metres, a semicircular apse, walls two metres thick, sculpted capitals inside the apse and a rose window at the foot, facing a doorway of great austerity. Formerly known as la Mesquita, it was replaced as the parish church by a new temple at the end of the 15th century. Declared a historical-artistic monument in 1931, it was left almost in ruins after the damage of the Civil War, which in 1937 caused the loss of its altarpieces. Recovered as an urban space, it reopened to the public on 11 September 1979. Photo: Jordi Gili (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Alcover
