What to see and do in Ciutadilla

Ciutadilla
Village
Ciutadilla is a small municipality in the comarca of l'Urgell, in the province of Lleida, with the Gothic-Renaissance castle of Ciutadilla, already mentioned in 1165 and remodelled in the 16th century by the Guimerà family, which gives its name to the marquisate of Ciutadilla. It functioned as a military fortress until its conversion into a palace and remained inhabited until 1908; it preserves the outward appearance of a fortress, a trapezoidal inner courtyard and a seven-storey tower. On the outskirts are the remains of the 16th-century convent of the Rosary and the hermitage of San Roque. It is the birthplace of the beata Teresa Prats Martí, born in 1895. The municipality has 186 inhabitants and celebrates its patron saint's festival on the first weekend of August.
Castle of Ciutadilla
Monument
The castle of Ciutadilla, which gives the municipality its name, was an 11th-century medieval fortress with Romanesque and Gothic additions, transformed in the 16th century into a Renaissance palace and inhabited until 1908. The first written reference dates from 30 September 1029, when an arbitration ruling cites its walls and Guerau de Guimerà as jurisdictional lord. In the 16th century, Gispert de Guimerà built the keep, quadrangular, of seven storeys, with machicolations and Renaissance windows on the upper floors. The interior courtyard, of trapezoidal plan, preserved a colonnaded gallery until the early 20th century. Left exposed to the elements, part of the building began to be demolished in 1908; at the end of the 20th century minimal restoration works were carried out.
Ciutadilla Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Ciutadilla is celebrated in early August (in 2026, from the 8th to the 10th), with a solemn mass, sardana dancing, a popular vermouth gathering, children's entertainment and open-air dances over three days.
