Town of Guimerà Monument · Guimerà, Urgell, Lleida The medieval Gothic ensemble of Guimerà, one of the best-preserved medieval villages in Catalonia, situated in the valley of the River Corb. It is known as "el nou de copes" (the nine of cups) for the cluster of houses seen from the river. It preserves a walled perimeter with four original gateways, arcaded streets and covered passageways. The Gothic church of Santa Maria, begun in the 14th century, houses a modernist altarpiece by Josep Maria Jujol; the chapel of Sant Esteve, from the same period, is also preserved. The castle, documented since the 11th century, was the seat of baronial and later comital power, and suffered significant damage during the Carlist siege of 1835. The population has fallen from more than 1,600 inhabitants in the 1880s to around 250 today. Photo: MARIA ROSA FERRE ✿ (CC BY-SA 2.0) What to see and do in Guimerà
