What to see and do in Castellserà

Castellserà
Village
Castellserà is a municipality in the comarca of l'Urgell, in the province of Lleida, in the Pla d'Urgell at the foot of the Almenara range, with 993 inhabitants over an area of 15.84 km² that the Urgell canal divides into a northern dry-farming part and a southern irrigated one. The 12th-century castle that gives the village its name and the neighbouring range are the canting arms of its coat of arms. Notable is la Panera, a 16th-century Renaissance building commissioned by Abbot Domènec Porta, originally a storehouse for the tithes of the Poblet lordship within the Barony of Urgell and today a cultural space, declared a Site of National Interest in 2001. It also preserves a Gothic-Renaissance boundary cross and the manor house of Cal Tarragona, from the early 17th century.
The Granary of Castellserà
Monument
La Panera de Castellserà, popularly known as el castell, is in fact the old granary that the monastery of Poblet, lord of the town, built to administer the tithe from its possessions in Urgell; the work is due to Abbot Domènec Porta, between 1502 and 1526, already in the 16th century, whose coat of arms appears both on the doorway and on an arcade inside. The building, of trapezoidal plan and two storeys, preserves on the ground floor five circular columns supporting, by means of six segmental arches, the wooden-beamed ceiling; earlier foundations suggest an older structure, that of the vanished castle of the place. Declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 2001. After the disentailment it passed into private hands, and in 1982 it was acquired by the town council, which turned it into a cultural centre under the name Cistella.
Wayside Cross of Castellserà
Monument
A 16th-century wayside cross, declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), supported by a plain octagonal shaft on a stepped base. The knop, elongated and octagonal, is decorated at its base with monster faces flanking four coats of arms, and houses evangelists and saints —each with their attribute— within pointed arches leading to the lantern with its eight niches. On one face is Christ the Redeemer, with palmettes and a skull below, and on the other the Virgin surrounded by angel heads; between the arms, with volutes, runs a decoration of interlaced stems. Formerly located beside Cal Toret, it was dismantled and kept in pieces during the Civil War, and restored by the town council in 1949 on the occasion of the Santa Misión, when it was placed in its current location.
Castellserà Main Festival
Activity
The festa major of Castellserà is celebrated on the weekend closest to 22 July, in honor of Santa Maria Magdalena, patron saint of the town and titular of its parish church.
