Penelles
Village
Penelles is a municipality of the Noguera comarca, on the border with the Urgell, whose economy is based on irrigated farming, livestock raising and the wine industry. It is documented since 1079 as a possession of Ermengol IV d'Urgell, a fortified settlement dependent on the municipality of the castle of Butsènit. In 1186 its castle passed to the Order of the Temple and, after its dissolution in 1317, to the Order of the Hospital, which incorporated it into the commandery of Barbens until the 19th-century disentailment; today it is known as the Castillo del Remedio, restored in 1954. It also preserves the church of San Juan Bautista. Its main festival is held on the last weekend of August.
