Bellcaire d'Urgell
Village
Bellcaire d'Urgell is a municipality in the province of Lleida, in the comarca of la Noguera, at an altitude of 267 metres, south of the serra d'Almenara, on the plain irrigated by the canal d'Urgell, with 1,275 inhabitants. Its name may come from the Arabic Bu-l-khàir, linked to a figure of Islamic Balaguer, or from the Occitan bell caire, “fine work”. Remains found in the serra d'Almenara and at El Pedrís, a settlement incorporated in 1857, show human presence since the Neolithic, and from Roman times survive some hand mills. Resettled after the Christian reconquest around 1090-91 under Count Ermengol IV, with new settlers in 1139 and 1157, it preserves a late Gothic wayside cross with figures of apostles on the capital. It lives from irrigated farming, with cereals and fruit trees.
