What to see and do in Tornabous

Tornabous
Village
Tornabous is a municipality in the comarca of Urgell, with 832 inhabitants (INE 2025), home to the Iberian settlement of Molí d'Espígol, one of the best-preserved examples of town planning in the Ilergetian area, which recent research identifies with the Iberian capital of Athanàgia or Atanagrum. The present parish church of Santa Maria, from the 20th century, incorporates remains of the 12th-14th century Romanesque temple, and the Casal dels Pujalt, a 16th-century Renaissance mansion, today serves as the Casa de la Vila (town hall). The municipality also includes the settlements of la Guàrdia d'Urgell and el Tarròs, where Lluís Companys, president of the Generalitat, was born in 1882. Salvador Seguí, "el Noi del Sucre", leader of early 20th-century Catalan anarcho-syndicalism, was also born in el Tarròs.
Tower of la Guàrdia de Déu
Monument
The tower of la Guàrdia d'Urgell, also called Torre de la Guàrdia de Déu, stands in the hamlet of la Guàrdia d'Urgell, in the term of Tornabous (Urgell county, Lleida), at the foot of the Serra d'Almenara. Documented since 1063 as ipsa Guardia de Deu in texts of the counts of Urgell Ermengol III and his wife Llúcia, it is attributed to the 12th century due to the absence of masons' marks. It is a Romanesque building with a rectangular plan and three storeys in sandstone, with a barrel vault and an entrance on the south side six metres up, under a round arch. In modern times it was converted into a dwelling. It is declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (the highest heritage protection status in Catalonia).
Iberian Settlement of Molí d'Espígol
Curiosity
The Iberian settlement of Molí d'Espígol, in Tornabous (Urgell), was the largest city of the Ilergete tribe, probably identified with Atanagrum, its capital. It covered about 16 hectares and came to have around 6,000 inhabitants and close to 500 houses. It was founded at the end of the 8th century BC, reached its greatest splendour between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, and was destroyed by fire around 200 BC during the Second Punic War, after a brief reoccupation around 100 BC. Four walls from different periods survive, forming an elliptical enclosure, grid-pattern streets, dwellings, metalworking forges, silos and House A, an aristocratic residence with seven rooms. Excavated since 1970, it has been a bien cultural de interés nacional (the highest heritage protection status in Catalonia) since 2009.
Abandonment of the Ilergetian settlement of Molí d'Espígol
Historical milestone
The Iberian oppidum of Molí d'Espígol, one of the urban centres of the Ilergetes, was abandoned in the second century BC after the wars that followed the Roman conquest. It preserves streets, walls and dwellings of orthogonal plan.
