Bellmunt d'Urgell
Village
Bellmunt d'Urgell is a small municipality in the south of the comarca of la Noguera, in Lleida, perched at 379 metres above sea level on a hill of the serra de Bellmunt, between the villages of Mongay, Penellas and Bellcaire. The range, included in the Plan for Natural Interest Areas, commands a view over the Urgell plain, which has earned it the nicknames balcó and espia d'Urgell (“balcony” and “spy” of Urgell): from its northern side a broad view of the Pyrenees can be seen, and from the southern side, the Plana de l'Urgell. It was known as Bellmunt until 1984, when it officially took the name Bellmunt d'Urgell. Its economy is based on irrigated agriculture and livestock farming. At the centre of the village stands the church of Sant Josep, a Gothic and Renaissance building declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
