What to see and do in Almacelles

Almacelles
Village
Almacelles is a town in the Segrià, in the province of Lleida, bordering Aragon, with a historic centre declared a site of interest and home to the Aplec de la Mare de Déu de l'Olivar. It has 7,018 inhabitants (INE 2025) and its name comes from the Arabic āl-māsayah, "the diamond". It belonged to Lérida until, after its destruction in the 1640 uprising in Catalonia, it was declared crown property and resettled from 1773. In 1910 the arrival of water via the Aragon and Catalonia canal transformed much of its dry farmland into irrigated land, which today, together with livestock and agri-food industry, is the basis of its economy. Situated next to the A-2 motorway and 6 kilometres from Lérida airport, it includes the settlements of Mas del Lleó and La Saira.
Historic Centre of Almacelles
Monument
The historic core of Almacelles (Segrià, Lleida) is an ensemble declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) corresponding to Mayor and de la Mercè streets. After being razed in the War of the Reapers (Guerra dels Segadors), Melcior de Guàrdia, a Barcelona native, obtained the jurisdiction of the municipality from Charles III in 1773 and commissioned the architect Josep Mas i Dordal to design a new town, the first orthogonal grid ever planned in Catalonia, with eight blocks and forty houses around a central street eleven metres wide. A year and a half after the first stone was laid, twenty houses had already been built on Carrer de la Mercè, with simple, symmetrical neoclassical façades, a large segmental-arch doorway on the ground floor, wrought-iron balconies and small windows above.

Enlightenment refounding of Almacelles
Historical milestone
In 1773 Carlos III authorised the merchant Melcior de Guàrdia i Matas to repopulate the deserted site of Almacelles, with the commitment to raise a church and forty houses within six years. The result was an orthogonal grid of Enlightenment design, protected since 2009.
