Gimenells i el Pla de la Font
Village
Gimenells i el Pla de la Font is a municipality of 1,069 inhabitants in the Segrià, province of Lleida, which includes the settlements of Gimenells, el Pla de la Font and Santa María de Gimenells. Before the Muslim invasion there was already a small grouped settlement around a castle, of which remains survive. Its modern history begins in 1928, with the arrival of the Obra Tutelar Agrària and the first irrigation systems; in 1939 the Instituto Nacional de Colonización undertook the resettlement of Gimenells, as part of the state policy of creating new villages linked to irrigation that it carried out between 1939 and 1971, and in 1959 it also founded the hamlet of Pla de la Font. The municipality was constituted as such on 25 March 1991, when it split off from the municipal territory of Alpicat.
Castle of Gimenells
Monument
The castle of Gimenells is a monument in the municipality of Gimenells i el Pla de la Font (Segrià), declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Its ruins stand on an elongated hill, about 3 kilometres north of the village of Gimenells, formed by three structures: to the north a quadrangular tower with a battered base of large ashlars; to the south a rectangular structure of rustic appearance, possibly a cistern of Islamic origin later reused by a farmhouse; and, at the top, a third structure that appears to have been a 14th-century cellar or storehouse. It is mentioned as early as 1212, when Peter II of Aragon granted lands of his territory to the Order of the Temple; in the 14th century it passed to the Desvalls family, future marquises of Alfarràs, and was left depopulated after the War of the Reapers.
Colonization village of Gimenells
Historical milestone
Gimenells is the core of a colonisation village built from 1939 onwards by the Instituto Nacional de Colonización to settle farmers on the lands that the new irrigation of the Aragón y Cataluña canal had brought under cultivation in the Segrià. The layout, devised by the architect Alejandro de la Sota, is regular, with the church and town hall at its centre and whitewashed houses of one or two storeys with two- or four-pitched roofs. The estate was bought in 1928 by Ramon Albó and expropriated in 1943 to build the village, officially inaugurated on 1 July 1947; three kilometres away, towards Sucs, the ruins of the old castle of Gimenells survive, an earlier population centre. In 1991 the municipality split off from Alpicat.
