Enlightenment refounding of Almacelles

In 1773 Carlos III authorised the merchant Melcior de Guàrdia i Matas to repopulate the deserted site of Almacelles, with the commitment to raise a church and forty houses within six years. The result was an orthogonal grid of Enlightenment design, protected since 2009.
